Current Aspirin Labeling Sufficient, Says Aspirin Foundation

September 20, 2002

Washington, DC - (September 20, 2002) - The Aspirin Foundation of America (AFA) said today that it supports FDA's efforts to ensure the safe use of medications like aspirin. Aspirin, which has been used for more than one hundred years, continues to be one of the safest and most effective analgesics available.

The AFA also said that current warnings on aspirin product labels provide that the product is used safely. It noted that it is unaware of any sound scientific evidence that would warrant additional label warnings on the product.

The statements were included in comments submitted to FDA's Nonprescription Drug Advisory Committee (NDAC).

"There is no evidence which indicates that the current warnings are insufficient to allow proper and safe use of aspirin products by consumers or that additional label information" would be beneficial to the public, the AFA said in its comments.

Since its inception 21 years ago, the AFA has actively worked with FDA in developing appropriate regulations for aspirin use as an analgesic and to reduce the risk of conditions such as heart attack and stroke. The AFA reiterated its continuing support for FDA's work to protect the safety of users of analgesics.

It noted that aspirin has a long and proven track record in safely and effectively eliminating pain and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. For more than one hundred years, millions of consumers have safely used aspirin - which remains the world's leading medication.
